Approaching Portraits Workshop with Carol Hutcherson

Join artist Carol Hutcherson for a two-day workshop designed to help beginner and intermediate artists build confidence in drawing realistic portraits. This engaging class focuses on the fundamental structure and proportions of the human head, giving students a clear and approachable method for creating accurate, expressive portraits.

Through guided instruction and hands-on exercises, participants will explore essential techniques such as shading, value, and composition—key elements that bring depth and life to portrait drawings. Students will work from both photo references and a live model, gaining valuable experience observing and translating facial features onto the page.

In addition to drawing techniques, Carol will also discuss how these foundational skills can transition into painted portraits, offering insight for artists interested in expanding their portrait work into other mediums.

Whether you are just beginning your portrait journey or looking to strengthen your existing skills, this workshop provides practical tools, expert guidance, and an encouraging environment to grow your abilities.

The workshop will take place on Saturday, June 13 and Sunday, June 14 from 9am-4pm each day with an hour break for lunch.

Supply list

Paper: Strathmore 300 series Bristol Vellum, 1 pad size 9x12 or 11x14

Pencils: 1 set of any good brand graphite drawing pencils (Faber-Castell, Sanford Design 3800, Prismacolor Turquoise)

-1 Prismacolor Ebony - Jet Black Smooth

Erasers: 1 kneaded eraser, 1 Pink Pearl

Sharpener: small hand-held or X-Acto knife
