Faces and Features in Watercolor

Join watercolor artist Sherry Carlson for a focused, hands-on workshop designed to help you bring faces to life through the expressive and fluid medium of watercolor. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced painter looking to refine your portrait skills, this class will guide you through the foundational techniques of rendering facial features with accuracy and emotion.

You’ll learn how to:

• Sketch and proportion facial features with confidence

• Build up skin tones using transparent watercolor layers

• Capture the subtle shapes and shadows of eyes, noses, and mouths

Don't be intimidated by the subject matter—this workshop is all about exploration, growth, and having fun with the process. Sherry creates a supportive, encouraging environment where questions are welcomed and mistakes are part of the learning.

She will offer live demonstrations, personalized feedback, and plenty of time for practice. You'll leave with new tools and techniques for capturing the human face in your own unique style.

Suggested Supply List

• Watercolor paints (student or professional grade; include a range of warm and cool skin tones such as Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre, Alizarin Crimson, and Ultramarine Blue)

• Watercolor paper (140 lb. cold press, 9x12” or larger – bring at least 2 sheets or a pad)

• A palette for mixing colors

• Watercolor brushes (round brushes sizes 4, 6, and 10 suggested)

• Two water containers

• Pencil and eraser (kneaded eraser recommended)

• Paper towels or a clean rag

• Optional: Masking tape or a board for securing your paper

• Optional: Reference photo(s) of a face you’d like to paint
