Before color, brushwork, and surface effects can shine, a successful painting relies on thoughtful composition, confident drawing, and a clear understanding of visual structure. But how do we take a figure drawing and transform it into a painting that feels expressive, engaging, and alive?

Join award-winning and passionate figure painter Rosanne Mckenney for a two-day workshop exploring the timeless foundations of classical figure and portrait painting through a contemporary lens. Rosanne will guide participants through the process of building a compelling figure painting by combining strong observational skills with creative decision-making.

Throughout the workshop, participants will explore the essential principles of value, temperature relationships, drawing, and visual hierarchy, learning how to move beyond a simple figure study and develop a composition with intention, depth, and impact. Working from reference and live models, students will discover ways to simplify the figure while maintaining accuracy, strengthen their design choices, and create paintings that feel both grounded and expressive.

A special focus of the workshop will be learning how to make the support (background) an active part of the painting rather than something to overcome. Participants will explore approaches to using the background to enhance the figure, as well as opportunities to incorporate symbolism, abstraction, and personal expression alongside realism.

Working from clothed live models, students will build confidence in translating what they see into a painted statement. Rosanne will also share the digital tools, apps, and techniques she uses in her own practice to help maintain accuracy while simplifying and strengthening the figure.
