Join us for a three-day painting workshop with renowned watercolorist Richard Stephens!

Ready to elevate your painting skills? When you take a Richard Stephens workshop you will be exposed to three main things: informative technical information sprinkled with humor and anecdotes, educational painting demonstrations, and lots of one-on-one instruction to help you through your individual painting process. Richard has enjoyed a successful 45-year career as a freelance commercial artist and graphic designer in the advertising/marketing industry. He has a true passion for watercolor and enjoys the opportunity to share his knowledge and experience with students of all levels.

The beginning of each day will start with a short conversation or  “topic”, where the instructor will encourage questions and feedback while helping the students learn from each other. There will be at least one complete painting demonstration per day, lasting about an hour. Students will then learn techniques and creative uses for the “tools” in watercolor such as; brush choice and manipulation, color mixing, and water/pigment relationship. There is always a strong emphasis on the elements and principles of design. Richard will also communicate his process throughout the lesson.

After the demonstration, students will either start on their own paintings or the class will work together on exercises designed to reinforce the theme, “Lighten Up, Loosen Up”.  Richard offers individual advice on composition and techniques based on each student's unique style and goal. The class will then take a break for lunch, come back to finish their work, and then end the day with individual or group critiques. This workshop aims to expose students to a process of watercolor painting that has been successful for Richard Stephens in his career and help his class find their voice through their work.

"Lighten Up, Loosen Up" will start on Saturday, January 27th, and end on Monday, January 29th. Each day will be from 9 AM to 4 PM. Lunch will not be provided but you are welcome to bring your own food and drink.
