About the event
Join us for a two-day jewelry-making workshop that combines kumihimo braiding and bead weaving techniques to make a one-of-a-kind necklace. High School students and adults welcome - No experience necessary!
Kumihimo is a traditional Japanese art form of making braids and cords. The cords are created by taking several bundles with dozens of colorful threads, wrapping them around bobbins, and then braiding the bundles together in a diagonal criss-cross arrangement. In the past, kumihimo decorations were used as accessories for kimono and samurai armor. In the present day, the art form has evolved to more creative fusions such as hair accessories, bracelets, shoelaces, and even cellphone cords.
During day one, students will learn about the different cord structures and begin to create an 8-strand kumihimo braid. There will be a selection of materials to choose from such as satin and sari silk ribbon, hemp cord, embroidery thread, leather cord, and fine chain. Students will also learn how to set up a Marudai, a round top braiding stand, and prepare bobbins that act as counterweights. This is the most consistent and efficient way to make the braid.
On day two, students will enhance their braid by learning to weave seed and accent beads. To achieve this, students will learn how to thread the beads and work with the existing patterns of their braids to create truly unique pieces. There is no wrong way to do this! This part of the workshop will focus on adaptability and creative problem-solving.
For an additional cost, you may also add a handmade seashell pendant to your necklace.
This workshop will be led by local artist, Megan Propst, starting on Saturday, May 11, and ending on Sunday, May 12. Each day class will be held from 10 AM-2 PM. Lunch will be provided on Saturday. Students will be responsible for bringing their lunch on Sunday.
We hope to see you there!
