About the event

Session 3: Composition: Arranging Elements for Visual Impact

In this session, you'll uncover the secrets of creating visually compelling drawings by understanding and applying the principles of composition. You'll learn how to organize and arrange the elements within your artwork to achieve harmony, balance, and focus.

Embark on a creative journey with our 6-month drawing series, "The Art of Starting: Intro to Drawing." Designed for both beginners and intermediate artists, this program is perfect for anyone looking to deepen their drawing skills, explore new techniques, and build a strong artistic foundation. Drawing is essential to all art forms and is a prerequisite for painting. While attending all six classes is encouraged to fully experience the course, missing one or two sessions won’t significantly impact your progress. Each class is structured to teach a unique aspect of drawing, allowing you to benefit from the sessions you can attend.

Here's what we'll cover:

  1. Balance for Stability and Flow: Explore different types of balance—symmetrical, asymmetrical, and radial—and how they influence the overall feel of your composition. Learn to distribute visual weight effectively to make your artwork feel grounded and visually pleasing.

  2. Creating Strong Focal Points: Understand how to direct the viewer’s attention to the most important part of your drawing. Techniques such as contrast, placement, and the use of leading lines will help you highlight key elements and guide the viewer's eye across the artwork.

  3. Applying the Principles of Design: Dive into essential design principles like unity, variety, rhythm, and emphasis. These concepts will help you make deliberate choices about how to position elements, use space effectively, and keep your composition dynamic and engaging.

  4. Using the Rule of Thirds and Golden Ratio: Learn how to use these time-tested tools to structure your composition. Discover how these guidelines can help you place your subject in the most visually appealing way while maintaining natural and effortless flow.

  5. Experimenting with Negative Space: Negative space can be just as powerful as the objects within your composition. Learn how to use the space around and between your subjects to enhance balance, create contrast, and amplify your drawing’s impact.

  6. Adding Color to Enhance Your Composition: Discover how to use colored pencils to build depth, highlight focal points, and create mood within your drawings, adding another layer of richness and visual interest to your work.

Who Should Join:

This series is ideal for beginners starting their artistic journey and intermediate artists looking to refine their techniques or fill in gaps in their knowledge.
