Cottages by the Sea - A Watercolor Workshop

Capture the charm of coastal living in this relaxing and inspiring watercolor workshop with artist Sherry Carlson. This workshop is a fun time to use your imagination and translate ordinary references into dreamy cottages by the sea. Create your own escape choosing shutters, boats and critters to complete your vision in watercolor. Cottage template drawings provided for transfer to paper.

In this workshop, you’ll explore how to:

• Sketch simple cottage structures with correct perspective

• Add personality and detail to architecture with loose, expressive brushwork

• Create soft skies, sand, and foliage using wet-into-wet and dry brush techniques

• Use color and composition to evoke a relaxed, coastal atmosphere

  
  

Sherry’s step-by-step guidance, live demos, and gentle feedback make this class approachable and fun. No need to be an expert in drawing or watercolor—just come ready to explore! You’ll leave with a finished seaside scene and new techniques to use in your own art.

Suggested Supply List

• Watercolor paints (a range of warm and cool tones; suggested colors include Burnt Sienna, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue, Yellow Ochre, Sap Green, Payne’s Gray, and a few bright accent colors)

• Watercolor paper (140 lb. cold press, 9x12” or larger)

• Mixing palette

• Watercolor brushes (round sizes 6–10, and a flat brush if available)

• Pencil and eraser

• Two water containers

• Paper towels or clean rag

• Optional: Reference photos of seaside cottages, beach houses, or coastal scenes

• Optional: Ruler or straight edge for sketching cottage shapes
