Kerr Grabowski
Artist, Fabric Screen Printing
Ocean Springs MS-based artist, Kerr Grabowski, is known for her mixed media work and her elegantly whimsical dyed and printed wearable pieces.Â
After twenty-two years in rural New Jersey, where she headed the Fibers Program at Peters Valley School of Craft, Kerr returned in 2011 to her Mississippi roots.
Kerr is a recipient of both the Mississippi Council on the Arts Fellowship and a NJ Arts Fellowship. She exhibits and teaches internationally.
In her search for a more intuitive and painterly way to print, Kerr developed Deconstructed Screen Printing. She produced the DVD Deconstructed Screen Printing on her technique.Â
For me, mark-making is a natural activity and part of the celebration of being. My work stems from my southern roots and interest in cultures where art is an integral part of daily life.
I move back and forth between creating wearable and nonwearable pieces where each presents different challenges. Creating wearable art is a collaboration, I stay true to myself while also leaving aesthetic space for the future wearer; allowing them to bring the work to completion, to give it life. When working "for the wall" the rules are different. I utilize mixed media and take more chances; I go where my marks lead me.
